There are beautiful places to stay on Kauai. If you have an unlimited budget, you can find beautiful resorts but make sure your room or unit really is on the ocean. Many if the larger resorts have great accommodations but their are very limited number of units on the beach front. They also charge additional “resort” fees per night- usually another 20.00 per night.
We like the Wailua area the best. It is a shorter driving distance to the south and north shores. We enjoyed lots of activities in the area as well as on both other shores. Our impression of Poipu is that the area was over developed and could be located any where in the U.S. Hanalei and Princeville are beautiful but it is a lot of driving to the south and east shore attractions and there is only one road around the island and the traffic is heavy. It also floods out during hard rains and roads to and from can close.
If you are looking for condos in the Wailua area, check out Wailua Bay View, Kapaa Sands, Lanikai, the Islander. They are all on the beach and within walking distance of lots of little restaurants and shops, the farmers markets, happy hours, and the market. If you are looking for a moderate hotel on the beach, we do recommend the Kauai Shores Hotel.
We used Trip Advisor and Booking.com for all of our travel needs as well as Vacations To Go.com. The hotel room was 1500.00 cheaper through the travel agent for our 3 week stay as opposed to using Booking.com
